The wide use of technopolymers to produce components of machinery for the food industry has raised the problem of the food compatibility of engineering plastics. Considering that in most situations these engineering plastics are used not as packaging but directly as parts of the machinery producing or packaging food, it is necessary to carefully examine the environmental conditions such as steam, water, chemical compounds (e.g. preservatives) rather than just the non toxicity of the material or its chemical resistance. When selecting a technopolymer for a component in a food processing machine we must bear in mind:

  • certification of the material in contact with food according to the standards in use in the destination country
  • chemical resistance of the plastic with the food, components and additives makes contact with
  • resistance to environmental conditions: temperature level, steam, bactericide lamps, etc.
