Rio 2016 Olympic Games: Michael Phelps dives in. He strokes through the water, barely taking a breath. His nicknames say it all: ‘the bullet’ to some, ‘the cannibal’ to others. He devours the water and speeds through it. And at those Olympics, he smashed every record with his fourth consecutive gold in the 200-metre individual medley. And as for a very small yet highly technological component – a pair of designer swimming goggles – Omnia Plastica Srl from Busto Arsizio was involved: “Made at Phelps’s request,” says Luca Castellanza, the company’s managing director, “to provide greater peripheral vision.” It is not uncommon for a sports enterprise to emerge from an entrepreneurial venture: in both cases, the aim is to ensure the highest possible performance.
